Custom Wood Packaging

Custom Wood Packaging

Brown Wood provides custom wood packaging manufactured in the U.S. (cases, crates, racks, and specialty containers) from scratch to your specs. We help you envision, design, and produce custom wood boxes, cases, containers, crates, and racks that are memorable, cost-effective, and environmentally sound. We use a variety of construction techniques, materials, and finishes to create the specialty packaging that is right for your product. Send us a sketch or sample along with dimensions, quantity, wood species, and any finish or value-added work you need, and we’ll quote it, usually within 24 to 48 hours.

Have your product stand out before you even open the box! Brown Wood’s wood boxes, cases, and containers are an attractive way to safely secure your product. Our durable boxes, cases, and containers are completely functional and economical, providing you with the best solution for your packaging needs.

What We Provide

Our custom wooden boxes cover a wide range of formats and end uses:

  • Custom wooden gift boxes: Hinged cover, lift-off top, slide-top, jewelry, hat, photo, novelty, promotional, and premium wooden gift boxes.
  • Product-specific cases: Humidors, custom wood cannabis boxes, wine boxes (including stock 1- and 2-bottle), tea boxes, CD/DVD cases, drill boxes with routed cavities, knife holders and blocks, poker chip boxes, shadow boxes
  • Industrial and shipping: Crates, locked corner boxes, barrels, buckets
  • Holders, racks, and containers: Gun racks, pool cue racks, wine racks, spice racks, drying racks, test tube racks, toy chests, treasure chests, clamshell, and routed boxes for precision-fit components

If you don’t see your exact format, that’s not a problem: almost all the custom wooden boxes on this page started as a customer’s drawing.

Custom Wooden Box Capabilities

Custom wooden boxes cover a lot of ground. A routed humidor and a heavy-duty shipping crate are very different problems. Brown Wood handles both because the equipment, materials, and finishing options are all under one roof.

  • Machinery. CNC turning lathes, Mattison lathes, copy lathes, routers, shapers, 5-axis CNC, and molders. Our lathe range covers diameters from 1/8″ up to 30″ with turning lengths up to 19 feet, which means we can provide small components and oversized pieces on the same job if a project needs both.
  • Wood species and materials. Solid American hardwoods, imported exotics, veneers, composites, and laminates. Species selection is driven by the end use (engraving detail, finish quality, structural performance, weight, and cost). We’ll recommend options based on what your project needs.
  • Finishes. Water- and oil-based stains, lacquers, polyurethane, powder coating, and EPA-approved food-safe protectants and sealants (including food-grade oil and wax) for packaging that contacts food or consumables.
  • Secondary operations. Edge banding, rounding ends, decorative routing (roping, reeding, fluting), hangar bolt and insert installation, precision drilling, notching, and threading. These are the details that turn a machined box into a finished, branded product.
  • Value-added services. Assembly, packaging, labeling, drop-shipping, printing, silk screening, laser engraving, and warehousing are all done in-house, so your packaging program runs through one vendor instead of four.

Why Customers Stay With Us

Custom wood packaging is rarely a one-time purchase. Once a brand finds a manufacturer who can hold quality and pricing across reorders, they stay. Here are a few more reasons why our B2B customers stick around:

  • Everything is built in the U.S. For programs where overseas pricing is a real factor, we have long-standing supplier relationships in Canada and Asia and can quote both ways so you can compare honestly.
  • Ideal for repeat orders. Once tooling is set up and a prototype is approved, reorders are predictable on lead time and pricing.
  • Nearly a century of  B2B experience. Working exclusively with other businesses since 1927: OEMs, brand owners, fixture companies, and product developers.
  • Quote turnaround in 24–48 hours. Production lead times run 28 weeks, depending on quantity and complexity. The minimum for most parts is 2550 pieces.

FAQs About Custom Wood Packaging

Can you match an existing wood box we’re already buying — same dimensions, same look, same finish?

Yes, this is one of the more common requests we get. Customers come to us with a sample of a custom wooden box they’ve been buying from another supplier and want a second source, a domestic source, or a manufacturer who can hold tighter quality. Send us the part itself plus the quantity range, and we’ll spec it back, propose any changes that would improve manufacturability or cost, and quote it.

Will you make a sample before we commit to a full production run?

Yes, in most cases, but with a couple of conditions. Prototypes are accepted alongside an order for a production quantity, not as a stand-alone purchase, and they’re subject to setup or tooling charges on top of the per-piece run rate. This setup is intentional — it keeps prototype work tied to programs and lets us invest the engineering time properly. Most customers go through one round of prototype before locking in specs for the full run.

Why does custom wood packaging cost more from a U.S. manufacturer than from an overseas supplier, and when is the difference worth it?

The honest answer: domestic labor, hardwood, and finishing work cost more, and the per-piece price will usually reflect that. Where the math changes is total landed cost and risk. Overseas quotes don’t typically include freight, duties, brokerage, demurrage if a container sits, or the cost of a delayed launch if production slips. They also don’t include the cost of replacing a bad run you can’t inspect until it lands. For programs where lead time predictability, tighter QC, and shorter reorder cycles matter more than the lowest unit price, domestic wins. For programs where unit cost is the only variable that matters, we have long-term relationships with Canadian and Asian wood products companies and will quote imported as well, so you can compare both on the same spec.

Can you handle ongoing supply for a packaging program — drop shipping and warehousing?

Yes. We handle assembly, packaging, labeling, printing, silk screening, laser engraving, and warehousing in-house, and we drop-ship directly to your customers, distribution centers, or fulfillment partners. For customers running steady-state packaging programs, this means one PO, one vendor, and one point of contact across the whole supply chain — rather than coordinating a manufacturer, a finisher, a fulfillment house, and a freight broker separately.
